Imre Horváth (1954) received M.Sc. in mechanical engineering (1978) and in engineering education (1980) from the Technical University of Budapest. He was working for the Hungarian Shipyards and Crane Factory between 1978 and 1984. He has had various faculty positions at the Technical University of Budapest between 1985 and 1997. He earned a dr. univ. title (1987) and a Ph.D. title (1994) from the TU Budapest, and a C.D.Sc. title from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1993). Since 1997 he is a full professor of Computer Aided Design and Engineering at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering of the Delft University of Technology. From 1st January 2005 he is Director of Research of the Faculty.

He is author of three books (available in Hungarian), translated 2 books, and wrote 11 excerpts of books. He was guest editor of 6 special issues of various journals (e.g., CAD, JED, JCISE, CiI) and editor of 8 conference proceedings. He has written 33 journal papers and 67 refereed conference papers as first author, and co-authored more than 170 journal papers and conference papers. He received 4 best paper awards (e.g., from ASME, ICED). He initiated and is the general chairman of the Tools and Methods of Competitive Engineering (TMCE) International Symposiums over 12 years. He is co-editor-in-chief of the Journal Computer Aided Design since 2004, and member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Journal of Engineering Design since 1998. He is member of the Executive Committee of the CIE Division of the ASME, and program chair for the 2005 CIE Conference. He has been reviewer for several international journals and conferences. His primary research interests are in philosophical and theoretical aspects of design research, computer support of conceptual design, new system interfaces, vague discrete modelling of shape families, multi-physics-based behavioural simulation, free-form boundary prototyping, and formalisation and structuring of design knowledge. As educator he is currently interested in computer application in conceptual design, integrating research into design education, and teleconferencing-based active learning.
